Metal-free synthesis of unsymmetric bis(thioesters)

Abstract: The first metal-free protocol for efficient synthesis of unsymmetric bis(thioesters) via functionalization of dithiols with two different α,β-unsaturated aldehydes is presented.

“…In 2023, Bołt and colleagues described an intriguing hydrogermylation protocol (Figure 67). [238] This involved the utilization of an octacarbonyl dicobalt(0) complex in conjunction with a bulky NHC ligand, resulting in highly regioselective Markovnikov addition of hydrogermanes to various alkynes.…”

“…189 Recently, cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikovtype selective hydrogermylation of terminal alkynes was developed by Bolt and co-workers to access a-vinyl germanes. 190 The authors speculated that bulky ligands played an essential role in the control of regioselectivity, leading to the branched product in the hydrogermylation of terminal alkynes (Scheme 47).…”

“…Recently, we have designed and successfully tested a simple, chemoselective protocol for the synthesis of thioesters in thiol-enal addition, catalyzed by an in situ generated bulky NHC ligand. 10,11 This approach has led exclusively to thioesters in high yields without side-products originating from the Michael addition to the α,β-unsaturated system. Inspired by this work and bearing in mind the applications of thioester moieties in polymer chemistry, we turned our attention to polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS®, SQ), which are well-defined, nanometric cage entities with the general formula [RSiO 1 .5 ] n with a robust and thermally stable siloxane framework.…”
