Metal-Assisted Hydrolysis Reactions Involving Lipids: A Review

Abstract: This report covers major advances in the use of metal ions and complexes to hydrolyze ester and phosphate ester lipid bonds. These metal-based Lewis acids have been investigated as catalysts to isolate fatty acids from biological sources, as probes to study phospholipid bilayer properties, as tools to examine signal transduction pathways, and as lead compounds toward the discovery of therapeutic agents. Metal ions that accelerate phosphate ester hydrolysis under mild conditions of temperature and pH may have t… Show more

“…Due to the fact that lipids are easily designed, synthesized and characterized, they have wide application areas [Zhi et al, 2018, Williams andGrant., 2019]. Many factors on the surface of the nanoparticle used in the calciumphosphate-lipid system can affect blood retention time and organ-specific accumulation [Alexis et al, 2008, Nuti et al, 2018.…”

“…13 Many metal ions such as Ce 4+ , Co 2+ , Co 3+ , Fe 3+ , Ni 2+ , Mo 4+ , Pd 2+ , Zr 4+ and trivalent lanthanides are considered hydrolytic agents. 14,15 Metal-induced RNA cleavage has been used as a structural probing method. 16 Some single-strand nucleic acids can bind certain metal ions and exhibit catalytic activities for DNA or RNA cleavage.…”
