Metacognitive challenges to support self-reflection of students in online Software Engineering Education

Abstract: Software engineering education requires students to develop technical knowledge and advanced cognitive and behavioral skills, particularly in the transition from novice to proficient. In distance learning, the hurdles are greater because students require greater autonomy, adopting strategies of self and co-regulation of learning. Facing these challenges, the SimProgramming approach has been transposed into the context of DL: e-SimProgramming. In the second iteration of e-SimProgramming implementation (2019/202… Show more

“…Our analysis of the self-reflection comments provides evidence that students took the time to reflect on the learning experience. Exercises promoting selfreflection have been shown to be positively correlated with student success in software engineering courses [17] and students have reported finding selfreflection helpful [16]. Instructors could harness answers from these exercises in conjunction with the performance on code reviews to identify learning gaps, and thus personalize teaching strategies targeting students struggling with the concepts at hand.…”

“…SimProgramming is a didactic approach for software engineering education that focuses on the transition between beginner and advanced learning content [11]. This didactic approach is based on situated learning for self-and coregulation of learning and formative assessment, called e-SimProgramming [12], applied in an undergraduate course of a Computer Engineering program in online higher education in Portugal. The course is structured in 6 topics, each lasting two weeks.…”
