Metabonomics of Human Colorectal Cancer: New Approaches for Early Diagnosis and Biomarker Discovery

Abstract: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers in the world, having both high prevalence and mortality. It is usually diagnosed at advanced stages due to the limitations of current screening methods used in the clinic. There is an urgent need to develop new biomarkers and modalities to detect, diagnose, and monitor the disease. Metabonomics, an approach that involves the comprehensive profiling of the full complement of endogenous metabolites in a biological system, has demonstrated its great potent… Show more

“…It is a powerful analytical platform that allows for the assessment of global metabolic profiles in easily accessible biofluids and biomarker discovery in order to distinguish between diseased and non-diseased status information [8] as well as for the evaluation of drug toxicity and gene function [9]. A number of new analytical technologies have been employed for metabolomics analysis, including 1 H-NMR [10], ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole-time-of-flight/high-sensitivity mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF/HSMS) [11], UPLC-electrospray ionization/MS (UPLC-ESI/MS) [12], gas chromatography/MS [13] and others.…”

“…Long-term examination of serum tumor markers may help identify novel tumor markers with superior efficacy [39][40][41]. Even if novel markers are found, it is still comparable for THI under the unified system.…”

“…Today, thanks to metabolomics (7), one is able to define prognostic, early and diagnostic, and late biomarkers of diseases (8), which is an important breakthrough for secondary prevention. This evidently applies to dietrelated chronic diseases like obesity (9), type 2 diabetes (10), cardiovascular diseases (11) and cancers (12). But to the best of our knowledge, the healthy state remains to be defined or characterized via metabolomics.…”
