Metabonomic study of syndrome of liver qi stagnation and spleen deficiency in rats

Abstract: The (1)H NMR spectra of metabolites in the rat blood are differentially changed after chronic stress. Specific, characteristic metabolic products can be identified by analyses of metabonomics, which lead to interpretation of biological feature of Chinese medicine syndromes. Therefore, metabonomic analysis is an approach with good development prospects to studies of TCM syndromes.

“…TCM theory is intrinsically correlated with metabonomics, so using metabonomics facilitates TCM modernization, such as the essence of "patterns", "pattern identification", and "Bianzhengshizhi (identify patterns and administer treatment)". Preliminary NMR-based metabonomic studies of "patterns" in TCM [11,12] aimed directly at selected "patterns" with few studies published concerning the application of metabonomics to "pattern identification".…”

“…Metabonomics realistically reflects the overall environment of various characteristic changes in humoral metabolites and reveals the overall human metabolic network and the laws governing metabolic changes under the influence of medicine [4]. This property is consistent with the holistic philosophy of TCM and might provide an opportunity to express scientifically the meaning of evidence-based Chinese medicine, such as Chinese medicine syndromes (CMS), preventive treatment, the action of Chinese medicine, Chinese medical formulas (CMF) and acupuncture efficacy [1,5]. In a clinical study, the metabonomics method was applied to study clinical urine samples in patients with suboptimal health with different syndromes [6].…”

“…In a clinical study, the metabonomics method was applied to study clinical urine samples in patients with suboptimal health with different syndromes [6]. In nonclinical studies, the metabonomics method has been applied in discussing the syndrome of the stagnation of liver Qi and spleen deficiency and has assisted in revealing the biological changes in the rats with chronic restraint stress-induced syndrome of stagnation of the liver Qi and spleen deficiency [5,6]. The analysis of plasma metabonomics was applied in mini-swines with qi deficiency and blood stasis syndrome from chronic myocardial ischemia [7] and in research on the evaluation of the fever syndrome model in rats [8].…”

“…So these differential metabolites can be considered as potential metabolic biomarkers of Qi deficiency and Blood Stasis Syndrome. Luo et al [17] studied the plasma metabolic phenotype in rats with Syndrome of Liver Qi Stagnation and spleen deficiency. Compared with control group, model rats displayed significant changes in spectral peak shapes of acetate, lactate, tyrosine, low-density lipoprotein.…”
