Metabolomics analysis of nitrogen-containing metabolites between two Dendrobium plants

Abstract: Nitrogen-containing compounds especially alkaloids are important medicinal ingredients in caulis dendrobii plants. Using solid-phase extraction coupled with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry and multivariate data analysis methods, metabolic profiling of the nitrogen-containing compounds was established to distinguish Dendrobium huoshanense and Dendrobium officinale. Hundreds of nitrogen-containing compounds from the two caulis dendrobii were purified by the MCX cartridges. Some compounds were iden… Show more

“…For example, the comparative metabolite analysis of Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo and Dendrobium huoshanense Z. Z. Tang et S. J. Cheng showed that the accumulation of alkaloids was species-specific ( Song et al, 2020 ). Ten potential anti-inflammatory alkaloid components were detected from the extraction of Dendrobium aphyllum (Roxb.)…”

“…To optimize the condition of mass spectrometry, the suitable CID energy was achieved by the direct infusion experiment. Generally, the strongest fragment ions and the smallest number of fragments were observed at 30-35% collision energy, whereas the abundances of the fragments decreased substantially at 45% or greater collision energy (Song et al 2020). In this experiment, sarpagine and reserpine achieved sufficient fragments both in quantity and intensity at 40% collision energy.…”

“…Thus far, the composition and biosynthetic pathway of the alkaloids in D. officinale has not been entirely understood. The determination of the alkaloids between D. officinale and D. nobile using an LC-MS method showed that 25 identical compositions in the two Dendrobium plants were tentatively identified; however, dendrobine was only detected in D. nobile (Song et al, 2020). Using a UPLC method, a few coumarins, alkaloids and bibenzyl components from fifteen Dendrobium species were quantitatively determined.…”

“…There were 11 secondary metabolites that were considered as biomarkers of D. officinale and Dendrobium huoshanense ( Jin et al, 2016 ). Moreover, in these two species, as many as 133 nitrogenous compounds were identified, and allyl alkaloid is an important medicinal component worth further investigation ( Song et al, 2020 ). For D. officinale plants, the third year is the most suitable harvest time based on the accumulation of metabolites ( Jin et al, 2016 ).…”
