Metabolite Profiling of Triterpene Glycosides of the Far Eastern Sea Cucumber Eupentacta fraudatrix and Their Distribution in Various Body Components Using LC-ESI QTOF-MS

Abstract: The Far Eastern sea cucumber Eupentacta fraudatrix is an inhabitant of shallow waters of the south part of the Sea of Japan. This animal is an interesting and rich source of triterpene glycosides with unique chemical structures and various biological activities. The objective of this study was to investigate composition and distribution in various body components of triterpene glycosides of the sea cucumber E. fraudatrix. We applied LC-ESI MS (liquid chromatography–electrospray mass spectrometry) of whole body… Show more

“…For instances, holothurinosides A/A 1 ( m / z 1303) and E/E 1 ( m / z 1287) were produced by the vacuolar cells, while the other congeners generated by the neurosecretory-like cells. Recently, Popov and co-workers also investigated the distribution of saponin congeners in various organs of sea cucumber Eupentacta fraudatrix by LC-ESI QTOF-MS and stated the same metabolite profile for the whole body extract and the other individual analysed parts [ 71 ]. However, they reported the maximal content of the vast majority of detected compounds in the body wall as compared to other studied body components of sea cucumber.…”

“…716 The proles of triterpenoid glycosides in ve different body components (respiratory trees, body walls, gonad tubules, guts, and aquapharyngeal bulbs) of the sea cucumber Eupentacta fraudatrix were found to be qualitatively similar but with some variability in minor compounds. 717 Transcriptome sequence data for three brittle star species (Ophionotus victoriae, Amphiura liformis, Ophiopsila aranea) identied a number of neuropeptide precursor proteins. 718…”

“…Thus, our data along with previously obtained results demonstrate the presence of asterosaponins in all starfish body components. The fact that toxic triterpene glycosides, which are considered to be part of chemical defense system in sea cucumbers, were also found in all body components of sea cucumbers [20,21,22] may support the notion of the protective function of asterosaponins.…”
