Metabolite and mineral analyses of cotton near‐isogenic lines introgressed with QTLs for productivity and drought‐related traits

Abstract: Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for yield and drought-related traits were exchanged via marker-assisted selection between elite cultivars of two cotton species, Gossypium barbadense (GB) cv. F-177 and Gossypium hirsutum (GH) cv. Siv'on. Three of the resultant near-isogenic lines (NILs), each introgressed with a different QTL region, expressed an advantage in osmotic adjustment (OA) and other drought-related traits relative to their recipient parents. These NILs and the parental genotypes were field-grown under … Show more

“…Out of those 33 QTLs, five were related to physiological traits, 11 to plant productivity and 17 to fiber quality. Recently the NILs had also been developed by shifting the QTLs for yield and other traits among G. barbadence and G. hirsutum (Levi et al, 2009). A large number of QTLs associated with drought tolerance has also been identified in rice (Lafitte et al, 2007).…”

“…F-177 and Gossypium hirsutum (GH) cv. Siv'on, have been characterised for their metabolic and mineral compositions and compared to their parental genotypes (Levi et al, 2011). Plants were field-grown under wellwatered and water-limited conditions and comparative analysis was performed between i) GB and GH genotypes ii) the two water regimes and iii) each NIL and its recipient parent.…”

“…On the basis of the previously reported improved drought tolerance of the NILs versus their recipient parents, the authors focused their attention on those metabolites whose amount increased under stress in one or more of the NILs. In particular, an increase in aspartic acid, citric acid, malic acid, threonic acid, alanine, glycerol and myo-inositol among metabolites as well as in potassium, magnesium and calcium among minerals was suggested to contribute to the ameliorated adaptation to drought of these NILs (Levi et al, 2011).…”

“…Over the last two decades, many QTLs related to target traits have been identified using QTL-mapping methods by constructing intraspecific segregating populations of G. hirsutum with different target traits, such as fiber quality traits [46], yield and its components [7], resistance traits [810], early maturation traits [2, 11, 12] and drought-related traits [13]. In a study of traits associated with early maturity in cotton, more than 70 related QTLs were detected by linkage mapping [2, 11, 12].…”
