Metabolite analysis of tubers and leaves of two potato cultivars and their grafts

Abstract: Grafting experiments have shown that photoperiod-dependent induction of tuberisation in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is controlled by multiple overlapping signals, including mobile proteins, mRNAs, miRNAs and phytohormones. The effect of vegetative organs and tubers at metabolite level and vice versa, however, has not been studied in detail in potato. To unravel the influence of vegetative organs on the primary polar metabolite content of potato tubers and the effect of tuberisation on the metabolite content … Show more

“…The BmI4 inoculation of Sp plants seems to increase precocity of tuberization at 25 days whereas no tubers were found in non-inoculated plants. The observed increase of leaf growth and development in inoculated plants may be correlated with the earliness time of tuber initiation(Odgerel K and Bánfalvi Z 2021). Early tuberization was also reported in potato plants inoculated by PGPB byOswald et al (2011).…”

“…This may be expected, considering that PVY N-Wi and PVY O share other important features, including genome content and serological reactivity ( Karasev et al., 2010 ), and a reported incompatibility with Premier Russet. Interestingly, ribitol is generally not thought to occur in plants and has previously been used as internal standard for GC-MS studies in potato ( Odgerel and Ba ínfalvi, 2021 ). Therefore, the ‘ribitol-like’ MS spectrum and chromatographic behavior observed in this study was probably due to the presence of a similar sugar alcohol rather than ribitol itself.…”

“…While grafting technology has become widely implemented, the effects of inter-cultivar grafting on the metabolite composition of potato tubers are still largely unknown. Odgerel and Bánfalvi ( 2021 ) analysed two commercial potato cultivars with relatively similar tuber initiation times, while in the current work, very early- and very late-maturing potato lines were grafted. The previous study was extended only to 31 polar metabolites.…”

“…Four-week-old plantlets were transferred to small pots and grown further in a greenhouse. Plant growth conditions are described in detail by Odgerel and Bánfalvi ( 2021 ).…”
