“…The picture is further complicated by the fact that ascorbic acid deficiency in guinea pigs is also associated with a decreased incorporation of S3~-sulfate by cartilage (4), an observation which is difficult to reconcile with the results reported here. It is of interest that although the level of ascorbic acid in tissues of scorbutic guinea pigs is very much decreased, the ratio of dehydroascorbic acid to ascorbic acid appears to increase (16,17) as a result of a relatively greater decline in the concentration of ascorbic acid in the tissues (16). Indeed, an absolute increase in dehydroascorbic acid levels in most tissues of the scorbutic guinea pig has been reported (17).…”
