Metabolic syndrome associates with left atrial dysfunction

Abstract: MetS associates with subclinical LA dysfunction. Multiple components of MetS are related to LA dysfunction, notably visceral obesity and insulin resistance. Further studies are needed to elucidate the role of mechanical atrial remodeling in the development of AF.

“…28 Many studies have shown that IR is closely related to atrial functions. 29,30 In our study, it was observed that HOMA-IR values were positively correlated with atrial tissue Doppler parameters which are indicative of atrial function in obese children and tissue atrial conduction was increased in the IR group.…”

“…Atrial remodeling is the result of pathophysiological changes in atrial tissue and function resulting from stress conditions such as hypertension, heart failure, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and obesity. 33 Recently, Nyman et al 29 In our study, MetS components except for SBP and triglycerides correlated with LA dysfunction. HOMA and BMI have been stronger predictors of LA dysfunction than total cholesterol, which may support the role of insulin resistance in LA remodeling, as initially recorded in LV remodeling.…”

“…De hecho, como fue mencionado con anterioridad, en la práctica clínica diaria no es infrecuente encontrar pacientes con dimensiones auriculares normales en presencia de deterioro de la función sistólica y/o dilatación del ventrículo izquierdo 20 . En la misma línea, un estudio de resonancia magnética demostró una relación significativa entre la grasa visceral y el deterioro de la fracción de eyección de la AI, con volúmenes auriculares conservados 26 .…”
