Metabolic associated fatty liver disease and acute-on-chronic liver failure: common themes for common problems

Abstract: Metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) affects 20–30% of the worldwide population and is becoming the most common cause of chronic liver disease, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). MAFLD is the hepatic expression of metabolic dysfunction correlated with a variety of metabolic comorbidities including obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension and type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Obesity, altered gut permeability, chronic inflammation and dysbiosis related to MAFLD might predispose patients with cirrhosis t… Show more

“…Uric acid metabolism-related inflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome components, such as atherosclerosis and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis [24]. The incidence of metabolic dysfunction-associated liver disease is increasing in cases of ACLF [25,26]. Drug-induced liver injury presenting as ACLF is an important entity that is…”

“…Several mechanisms linking adiposity and MAFLD to carcinogenic development include alterations in insulin metabolism, the bioavailability of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), adipokine pathophysiology (such as adiponectin, leptin, and resistin), and increased propensity for systemic inflammation. This creates an environment conducive to the emergence of neoplasms, particularly colorectal cancer [41,[55][56][57][58][59].…”

“…В настоящий момент МАЖБП занимает твердые позиции в списке наиболее распространенных заболеваний печени [1,3,17,23,24]. Согласно последнему систематическому обзору распространенность МАЖБП в большинстве регионов мира значительно превышает 20% и имеет тенденцию к росту [25].…”
