Meta-Synthesis of Qualitative Case Studies

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to provide the research design of a meta-synthesis of qualitative case studies. The meta-synthesis aims at building theory out of primary qualitative case studies that have not been planned as part of a unified multisite effect. By drawing on an understanding of research synthesis as the interpretation of qualitative evidence from a postpositivistic perspective, this article proposes eight steps of synthesizing existing qualitative case study findings to build theory. “…Despite important methodological reflections in research in the area (Aguinis & Vandenberg, 2014;Hoon, 2013;King, Hebl, Morgan, & Ahmad, 2012), the hegemony of the report almost implies that we abandon Doing, and especially the relation between Saying and Doing when individual and/or collective phenomena are studied in the world of work. Hence, research in WOP seems to be exclusively focused on apprehending the phenomenon through communication, with limited emphasis on observation (Aguinis et al, 2009).…”

“…Qualitative meta-analysis consists in analyzing ''second hand'' cases from previous research in order to extend existing theory (Hoon 2013). Therefore, the main challenge lies in comparing heterogeneous data not designed to be treated together.…”

“…However, meta-analytical theory building is not completely different from the traditional grounded theory building based on first-hand cases: the model is provisionally achieved when reaching a saturation point i.e., when accounting for all the available data. Summarizing and revisiting Hoon's (2013) approach to qualitative meta-analysis, we consider three main steps.…”

“…Using evidence presented in case studies and quantitative research to develop theories in education, is a mode of research that aims to move past theory defining to construction (i.e., theory building literature see Hoon [2013], Locke [2007] or Eisenhardt and Graebner [2007], amongst others, for a discussion on this subject). To take steps towards theory construction this article looks at the discourses surrounding each active learning pedagogy in the literature, both theoretical and practical, through two lenses and contrasts those descriptions.…”
