Meta‐analysis of Vitamin D Deficiency and Risk of Atrial Fibrillation

Abstract: Background: There are accumulating studies investigating the association between vitamin D status and the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the results in these studies were inconsistent in regard to the role of vitamin D deficiency in predicting the development of AF. Hypothesis: Vitamin D deficiency is associated increased risk of AF. Methods: Using PubMed and Embase databases, we searched for records published before March 2016. Additionally, a manual search was conducted using all review articles … Show more

“…Association between vitamin D deficiency and cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been established through observational studies. 1,2 Vitamin D levels are usually measured by serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH] D). Low levels of serum 25(OH)D are associated with increased prevalence of coronary heart disease 3,4 as well as incident cardiovascular disease.…”

“…VitD deficiency is known to play a key role in the pathogenesis of CAD, left ventricular hypertrophy and AF [11,15,16] . The vitD deficiency has been shown to be associated with left atrial fibrosis and increased risk of AF recurrence after ablation [17] .…”

“…39 Recently, the results of studies have shown that increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to elevated oxidative stress levels increase the cardiac inflammatory indices such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and the increase in age-related apoptosis. 40 Consequently, it is possible that atrial negative regulation leads to a pre-excitation syndrome or a block in the AV node in post-menopause period. 6 Also, studies have exhibited that impulse delay in the AV node and atrial depolarization is increased with the aging process.…”
