Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials on Hydrocolloid Occlusive Dressing Versus Conventional Gauze Dressing in the Healing of Chronic Wounds

Abstract: Chronic wound management is a difficult area in surgical practice. A wide range of dressings have been recommended for the management of chronic wounds. The present meta-analysis was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of hydrocolloid dressing (HCD) in the healing of chronic wounds compared with conventional gauze dressing. All available controlled clinical trials published before December 2001 that compared HCD to conventional gauze dressing in the healing of chronic wounds were systematically reviewed.… Show more

“…The odds ratio for healing with hydrocolloid dressing was 1.72 compared to the conventional paraffin gauze dressing (i.e., 72 % more wounds healed completely with hydrocolloid dressing than with conventional paraffin gauze dressing) [22]. This meta-analysis confirmed the beneficial effects of moisture-retentive occlusive dressing in terms of complete healing of chronic wounds.…”

“…Evaporation of wound exudates through an open dressing, namely, gauze or cotton pads, leads to cooling, desiccation, and dehydration of surface cells. The mitotic rate of healing cells is diminished at lower body temperatures [22]. Moreover, the layer of dehydrated dead cells on the top of wound cavity serves as a good food for microbes hampering healing.…”

“…109,110 These debilitating wounds have failed to progress through the normal stages of healing and, therefore, enter a state of pathological inflammation. 111 This leads to delayed or incomplete healing with poor anatomical and functional outcomes as well as detrimental effects on patient quality of life.…”

“…It is crucial that laceration and chronic wounds are treated using advanced and active wound care products which provide a moist wound environment and absorb exudates, and an antibacterial barrier 11,12 . Burn wounds (minor burns, medically treated, and hospitalized) have been healed by using hydrogel and advanced wound care products to increase tissue proliferation and to improve the healing process [13][14][15][16][17] .…”
