Meta-analysis of qualitative studies: A tool for reviewing qualitative research findings in psychotherapy

Abstract: This article focuses on the presentation of qualitative meta-analysis as a method for reviewing qualitative studies. Qualitative meta-analysis is an attempt to conduct a rigorous secondary qualitative analysis of primary qualitative findings. Its purpose*to provide a more comprehensive description of a phenomenon and an assessment of the influence of the method of investigation on findings*is discussed. “…The analysis of the meta-study was an empirical and theory-driven exercise, but it was also interpretive in nature, since during the analysis new categorizations and conceptualizations of the original findings were arrived at (Schreiber et al, 1997;Timulak, 2009). Within the meta-analysis, the essential elements of the previous studies (informed by the theoretically-grounded questions) were extracted, coded and listed, and the main findings were compared and categorized.…”

“…A qualitative meta-analysis was applied in order to undertake a rigorous secondary analysis of the primary empirical findings (Schreiber, Crooks & Stern, 1997;Timulak, 2009). The primary studies had used the same empirical data, but had utilized a variety of qualitative analytical approaches, including narrative analysis (e.g.…”

“…For example, Sandelowski et al (1997) and Britten et al (2002) suggest that approximately ten studies are an ideal number. Timulak (2009) recommends between ten and twenty. Most of the authors in this meta-synthesis published a number of articles analyzing the same population of individuals but with different research questions.…”

“…As Timulak [24] explains, there are two kinds of meta-syntheses: Those that aim to provide an assessment of the influence of a certain method on results reported in primary studies; and those that aim to increase the knowledge about a particular phenomenon. This study is framed in the latter approach.…”
