Meta-analysis of association between IL-6 -634C/G polymorphism and osteoporosis

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Osteoporosis is a common disease in the aging population and studies have shown that interleukin-6 (IL-6) is potentially implicated in its pathogenesis. This study was designed to assess the association between the IL-6 gene -634C/G polymorphism and osteoporosis. PubMed, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang databases were searched for eligible studies published up to and including December 2014 in English or Chinese. Meta-analysis was conducted by the RevMan5.2 software. Weigh… Show more

“… 10 In addition, many studies have focused on the association between IL-6 and BMD, and advocated IL-6 play an important role in affecting normal bone metabolism and leading to osteoporosis. 11 In Sun’s study, the level of IL-6 was found to be negatively correlated to BMD, and indicating chronic inflammation may increase the serum RANKLE, leading to the occurrence of osteoporosis. 5 In the current study, we found there was significant difference in the level of IL-6 among the three groups, and in the enrolled patients there were positive correlation between 14-3-3η and IL-6.…”

“…An in vitro study has shown that SNPs (rs1800795 and rs1800796) in the promoter region of the IL-6 gene are functionally very important in the susceptibility to CAD 79. However, recent genetic population studies are inconclusive regarding associations between the SNPs and circulating IL-6 levels 5,8–10. The reason for the discrepancies among different studies is unclear.…”

“…In a clinical study, Yan L et al reported that the GG genotype of the -634C/G polymorphism in IL-6 appears to play a role in reducing BMD, which affects normal bone metabolism and leads to osteoporosis [17].…”
