Meta‐analysis: capsule enteroscopy vs. conventional modalities in diagnosis of small bowel diseases

Abstract: SUMMARYBackground: Prospective trials support the role of capsule enteroscopy as an improvement in diagnosing mucosal lesions in the small bowel. Aim: To determine the diagnostic yield and safety of capsule enteroscopy vs. alternative diagnostic modalities (such as push enteroscopy, small bowel followthrough or enteroclysis) in patients with small bowel diseases. Methods: A search for prospective studies comparing capsule enteroscopy vs. other diagnostic tests in adults was performed between 1966 and 2005. Sel… Show more

“…Previous studies investigating the yield of WCE in the detection of small intestinal lesions in comparison with various imaging techniques have shown that WCE is superior to CT enteroclysis and small-bowel follow-through [18][19][20][21]. Indeed, the introduction of WCE has significantly improved the diagnostic yield of small bowel tumors whose detection has been notoriously challenging due to the limitations of other imaging modalities.…”

“…Patients with suspected small bowel stenosis were excluded from VCE evaluation in these studies. The superiority of VCE over small bowel follow-through and enteroclysis has been repeatedly demonstrated in multiple studies [15][16][17][18] .…”

“…Since then, more than 340 000 examinations (Given Imaging Ltd, Yoqneam, Israel, Spring 2006) have been performed worldwide with an overall complication rate of only 0.75% (6). Based on meta-analyses of published clinical results VCE has evolved to be the first line procedure in many hospitals (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13), keeping small bowel radiology as method of choice for patients who cannot take the capsule (13). In order to understand the diagnostic algorithm of modern small bowel examination we will discuss the video capsule technique, its indications and contraindications, advantages and disadvantages, types of true and false lesions and comparative studies of VCE and radiological methods of investigation of the small intestine.…”
