This research aims to determine the smartphone addiction levels of Turkish pre-service teachers. In this study, a relational screening model, which is one of the quantitative research methods, was used. The study group consists of 178 pre-service teachers studying at a State University in the West of Turkey. Smartphone Addiction Scale adapted to Turkish by Demirci, Orhan, Demirdas, Akpınar and Sert (2014) were used in the research. Data analysis in the research was done through the SPSS 25 package program. Descriptive statistical analysis, t-test and ANOVA statistical analysis and correlation analysis were performed on the data obtained in the study. When the findings obtained from the research are examined, it is seen that the pre-service Turkish Teacher candidates use their smart phones more than they planned; female pre-service teachers' have higher smartphone addiction levels than male pre-service teachers'. There is a significant difference between pre-service teachers' smartphone addiction levels and their gender, age, economic status, place where they spend most of their lives, education level of parents, parental professions, grade averages, class levels, the number of books they read, and the time they spend on social media and the Internet.

Akıllı telefonun günlük kontrol edilme sıklığı (β=0,35), şarj cihazı taşıma durumu (β=-0,12), uyanır uyanmaz akıllı telefonun kontrol edilmesi durumu (β=-0,29), akıllı telefon üzerinden sosyal medyanın günlük kullanım süresi (β=0,15) değişkenlerinin, öğrencilerin nomofobi düzeyini anlamlı etkilediği saptanmıştır. Bir diğer ifadeyle öğrencilerin nomofobi düzeylerinin; akıllı telefon ve sosyal medya kullanım nitelikleri tarafından %30 oranında yordandığı hesaplanmıştır. Nomofobi gizil değişkeni ve onun alt boyutlarını teşkil eden gözlem değişkenleri arasındaki tüm yolların da pozitif ve anlamlı olduğu belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin dersi derste dinleme (β=-0,22) ve derse katılım düzeyleri (β=-0,13) üzerinde nomofobinin negatif ve anlamlı bir etkisi bulunmuştur. Özetle öğrencilerin nomofobi düzeyleri arttıkça ders dinleme ve derse katılım performansları düşmektedir.

Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between nomophobia and the level of anxiety of undergraduate health sciences students. Method: Descriptive and correlational research design was used in the study. A Convenience sampling method was used for selection. Student volunteers (n = 1299) who met the study criteria were included in the study. Results: Of the students, 45.3% reported using smartphones for more than 5 hours a day. 32.2% reported checking their phones for more than 40 times a day. 54.3% indicated checking their phones first thing in the morning and 56.4% right before going to bed. The most common reason for using the phone was to access social media and the least common reason was shopping. 41.3% of the students thought that they had smartphone dependency. 63% of them said they have forgotten their phones somewhere at some point. 69.3% of the students reported feeling anxious due to forgetting their phones at some place. The mean score of the students for the Nomophobia Scale was 84.31±29.01, the mean score of the State Anxiety Scale was 44.22±11.37 and the mean score of the Trait Anxiety Scale was 46.39±9.58. The results of the study indicated that there was a significant relationship between nomophobia and anxiety (p <0.01). Further analysis revealed that the mean state and trait anxiety scores of the students with absence of nomophobia and mild level of nomophobia were significantly lower than those with moderate level and severe nomophobia. Therefore, there was a positive correlation between the average mean score of the Nomophobia Scale and the mean score of the State-Trait Anxiety Scale (p <0.01). Conclusion:Smartphone dependency appears to be associated with increased anxiety among undergraduate health sciences students.
