Mesenteric Inflammatory Pseudotumor: Unusual Presentation With Leukemoid Reaction and Massive Calcified Mass

Abstract: The authors describe a child with an unusual presentation of mesenteric inflammatory pseudotumor in association with leukemoid reaction. An 11-year-old-boy admitted with short stature was found to have an abdominal mass localized in the right lower quadrant. The leukocyte count was 92,000/mm3 with neutrophilic leukemoid reaction. Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed a massive calcified mass in the pelvis. Total resection of the mass was performed and the pathologic diagnosis of inflammato… Show more

“…Inflammatory pseudotumour (IPT) is an idiopathic inflammatory lesion characterised by the proliferation of myofibroblastic spindle cells with mixed inflammatory infiltrates of plasma cells, lymphocytes, eosinophils and histiocytes [1]. IPT has been described in various locations in the body including the lungs, lymph nodes, trachea, spleen, mesentery and skin [2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. IPT of the head and neck region most commonly occurs in the orbits [9,10], although IPT of the larynx, paranasal sinuses, parapharyngeal space and salivary glands [11][12][13][14][15] has also been reported.…”

“…These include elevated thrombocyte counts and erythrocyte sedimentation rates, hypochromic microcytic anaemia, hypergammaglobulinaemia, eosinophilia, leucocytosis, low serum iron and total iron binding capacity. Because these laboratory abnormalities resolve after tumour excision, they may be good follow-up indicators for recurrent tumour (9,11,13,17).…”

“…Similar to retroperitoneal fibrosis, IMT has been reported in conjunction with other autoimmune diseases and/or symptoms. 12 Herein, we report the eighth case of a mesenteric IMT in the English literature 4,5,[13][14][15][16][17] in a patient presenting with abdominal pain, fatigue, weight loss, uveitis, and anemia.…”
