Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells in cancer therapy

Abstract: The multipotent mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs), initially discovered from bone marrow in 1976, have been identified in nearly all tissues of human body now. The multipotency of MSCs allows them to give rise to osteocytes, chondrocytes, adipocytes, and other lineages. Moreover, armed with the immunomodulation capacity and tumor-homing property, MSCs are of special relevance for cell-based therapies in the treatment of cancer. However, hampered by lack of knowledge about the controversial roles that MSC p… Show more

“…However, limited progress has been made in translational medicine due to ignorance of the contentious roles that MSC play in the interaction with malignancies. Specifically, recent evidence suggests that MSC may play a therapeutic function in lung disorders and infections (Huang 2015 ; White et al 2016 ; Cruz and Rocco 2020 ; Shi et al 2020 ; Lan et al 2021 ; Hoang et al 2022 ). Accordingly, transplantation of MSCs and MSC-derived EVs are the main RM-based auxiliary treatments for COVID-19 that have been accepted by physicians or in clinical trials.…”

“…MSCs of different tissue origin have been investigated for treating several indications, including tissue injuries, autoimmune diseases, and metastatic cancer [ 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 , 46 ]. Use of both autologous and allogeneic MSCs has been investigated.…”

“…Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have been described as adult multipotent stem cells, showing many relevant properties, spanning from the ability to immunomodulate and migrate to specific sites of injury to the trans-differentiation into multiple cell types [1,2]. MSC have been considered ideal candidates for many clinical and cell therapy applications, almost concluding that their wide applicability was also possible in cancer treatment [3].…”
