Mesenchymal Stem Cells Migration Homing and Tracking

Abstract: In this review, we discuss the migration and homing ability of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and MSC-like cells and factors influencing this. We also discuss studies related to the mechanism of migration and homing and the approaches undertaken to enhance it. Finally, we describe the different methods available and frequently used to track and identify the injected cells in vivo.

“…The peripheral approach is based on key properties of MSCs including delivery of the cells ''homing'' to the site of injury. Interestingly, migration and homing are influenced by multiple factors including age, passage, and number of cells, culture conditions, and delivery method [40]. This migration and homing potential without tumorigenic potential has been described in different disease [41,42] and in BPD models previously [38,43].…”

“…Following transplantation, MSCs target and migrate to the site of injury. In some cases these cells respond to the local environment with appropriate secretion of soluble factors to ameliorate inflammation and promote repair [30] . This paracrine mechanism offers potential in ASD treatment.…”

“…8,12 Homing of transplanted stem cells to the targeted tissues depend on various factors such as the cell conditions, the host conditions and the delivery method. 15 Our previous study showed that direct injection of ASCs into injured myocardium signicantly increased le ventricular ejection fraction and reduced infarct size of infarcted rat hearts. 12 Therefore, we believe that ASCs is an effective candidate for treating congestive heart failure and other degenerative diseases.…”
