Mercury (Hg) is a toxic metal that bioaccumulates in aquatic organisms and along food chain. Many studies have reported the problem of mercury exposure in aquatic systems from Amazon basin, but very few have focused on the potential risks to wild fish. The present study reports the bioaccumulation of mercury and alterations in target organs of the predator fish Hoplias malabaricus (traíra) from Samuel reservoir, Amazon basin, Northern Brazil. About 18% of fish had mercury levels in muscle exceeding the safe limit for ingestion through food, established by WHO (0.5 μg Hg g(-1)). Fish were separated in two groups according to mercury bioaccumulation in liver (<0.2 μg Hg g(-1)-group I and >0.2 μg Hg g(-1)-group II) for biomarker comparisons. Catalase activity and number of macrophage centers were statistically higher in group II, confirming the potential of Hg to interfere with redox balance and to recruit defense cells to the liver. Conversely, erythrocyte nuclear alterations were less frequent in group II, indicating a more rigorous selection of erythrocytes or hormesis pattern of response. Glutathione S-transferase activity, lipid peroxidation, and histopathological analyses were not statistically different in the liver and gills of both groups. Comparison of lipid peroxidation levels of these fish with others captured in Southern Brazil during another study and the high incidence of morphological alterations in the liver and gills suggest that the bioaccumulation of mercury during continuous exposure is posing potential risks to the species.

Four sand pit lakes, at the Rio de Janeiro Sand Mining District, were monitored from November 2003 to November 2005, in order to characterize their hydrogeochemistry aiming to provide information to their possible use as fishponds at the end of mining activities. The results show diluted waters (low electrical conductivity) with low pH (<4) and relatively high sulfate and aluminum concentrations. The major water components (in particular Fe, Mn, SiO 2 , Al and SO 4 ) are related to water acidity, since it controls solubility of aluminum silicate minerals and Mn and Fe oxides. Fe, Mn and Al availability in these waters are probably associated to organic colloids formation. On the other hand, the SiO 2 content, as well as the decrease of sand mining in rainy season, may partially control Al availability by the formation of hydroxialuminum silicates. These geochemical processes together with the interruption of sand mining in the rainy season and the dilution of sand pit lakes water by rainwater can support the use of these pit lakes as fishpond for aquaculture.

reSuMo a correlação entre as características físicas e químicas do solo e o teor de mercúrio natural é importante para identificar aquelas que mais influenciam na retenção desse elemento nesses solos e sua distribuição nos diversos compartimentos ambientais. esse estudo teve por objetivos determinar o teor de Hg de solos sem influência antropogênica e correlacionar esse teor com as características físicas e químicas dos solos. a relevância deste trabalho se deve ao fato que a maioria das pesquisas é focada em solos contaminados e, em caso de solos tropicais, as pesquisas são ainda mais escassas. as características físicas e químicas de diferentes solos de mata natural do estado de Minas gerias e de um solo do estado do rio de Janeiro foram correlacionadas com os teores naturais de Hg dos solos. o teor de Hg foi determinado empregando-se o analisador direto de Hg dMa-80. a faixa de concentração de Hg encontrada foi de 0 a 215 µg kg -1 com média de 81 µg kg -1 . o teor de Hg dos solos correlacionou-se principalmente com o teor de argila e o pH do solo. Não houve correlação entre o teor de Hg e o de c. para solos com teores mais altos de Hg e mesma textura, a capacidade de troca catiônica passa a ser uma variável importante. palavras-chave: metal pesado, solos tropicais, pH, textura.
