The study investigated how mentoring is being adopted and practiced among academics in three universities in Edo State, Nigeria. A survey research design was used. A structured questionnaire was administered to 459 academic staff across the three universities in Edo State. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics and the Binomial test. The study finds that mentoring though not formalized was widely practiced in universities in Edo State. Both senior and junior lecturers agreed that mentoring was very important in teaching the younger colleagues how to better perform their jobs. Given the above findings, the study recommends that universities in Edo State should as a matter of necessity formalize the adoption of mentoring among academic staff thus giving it institutional support to make it more effective with measurable outcomes. Also, a mentoring programme of universities should be structured in a way that would incorporate the uniqueness of the different areas of specialization in advancing mentees' career development.

The influence of hybrid learning environments on professional development in teacher education was the focus of this paper. It also examined how professionalism in teaching relates with reflective teaching. In this paper, hybrid learning environments was defined as educational model that utilizes the benefits of both on-line and on-campus learning. All the lecturers (742) and students (2,046) of the three Faculties of Education, University of Calabar constituted the population of the study (2,788) from where a sample size of 500 (140 lecturers and 360 students) was selected. Multiple sampling methods were adopted in selecting the sample, including stratified, simple random and purposive sampling methods. A 15-item researcher made questionnaire was used to elicit data from respondents. It was a survey research study and descriptive statistics (frequency counts, weighted means, standard deviation and percentages were adopted for data analysis. A mean score of 2.00 formed the significant/acceptance level. It was found that hybrid learning environments are models of professional development in teacher education especially in the post COVID-19 pandemic. It also found that professionalism in teaching relates positively with reflective teaching. It was recommended that more learning and teaching opportunities should be created by universities and colleges for flexibility in instructional options and that continual deepening of knowledge and skills should be encouraged.

What is Behind the Shine? The Dark Side of Research Evaluation: A Conceptual Framework

Research evaluation (RE) is presently a widely discussed and prominent subject within the academic community. This article provides a conceptual framework that categorizes the dark side of RE and provides strategies to diminish it. At its core, this framework includes a generic model summarizing RE dark effects and anti-dark effects remedies and elucidating their relations. Four research questions were raised regarding the research interest in the dark side of RE, the nature of the dark effects of RE and remedies for them, their literature prominence, and whether it is possible to create a well-founded model for mitigating the dark side of RE. Theoretically, this framework is based on concepts of the philosophy of science. Methodologically, a structured literature review, methods of expert judgment, analysis and synthesis, and a sampler of 35 articles underpin it. Stakeholder and logical approaches were applied for classification. The suggested framework is the first in-depth attempt to elucidate the dark side of RE and how to mitigate it. In practical terms, the framework can be incorporated into university/government RE systems to “enlighten”/control their dark side, thereby improving the academic governance toolkit. It can also be used to develop subject-area/country-specific models for the dark side of RE.
