The prevalence and co-occurrence of psychiatric conditions among entrepreneurs and their families

Psychiatric conditions and sub-threshold psychiatric temperaments may influence entrepreneurs' affect, cognition, energy, motivation, circadian rhythms, activity levels, self-concept, creativity, and interpersonal behaviors in ways that influence business outcomes. We used a self-report survey to examine the prevalence and co-occurrence of five psychiatric conditions among 242 entrepreneurs and 93 comparison participants. Mental health differences directly or indirectly affected 72% of the entrepreneurs in this sample, including those with a personal mental health history (49%) and family mental health history among the asymptomatic entrepreneurs (23%). Entrepreneurs reported experiencing more depression (30%), ADHD (29%), substance use (12%), and bipolar disorder (11%) than comparison participants. Furthermore, 32% of the entrepreneurs reported having two or more mental health conditions, while 18% reported having three or more mental health conditions. Asymptomatic entrepreneurs (having no mental health issues) with asymptomatic families constituted only 24% of the entrepreneur participants. Entrepreneurs' psychiatric issues can affect their functioning and that of their ventures. Therefore, integrating knowledge about psychiatric conditions with research on personality traits can broaden the understanding of how mental healthrelated traits, states, and family history can influence entrepreneurial outcomes. We discuss methodological limitations as well as implications of our findings for entrepreneurship research and practice.

Resumo O objetivo deste texto é realçar o papel do indivíduo na criatividade nas organizações. Esse papel tem sido estranhamente remetido para um plano secundário, à medida que as modernas visões da criatividade a definem, sobretudo, com relação ao contexto em que ocorre. De fato, na perspectiva atual, a criatividade não pode ser entendida sem se considerarem os contextos funcional, relacional e organizacional nos quais está inserido o trabalhador. Tais são as considerações da maior parte dos autores que escreve sobre o tópico, como sejam Amabile (1996), Csikszentmihalyi (1996), ou, mais recentemente, Glăveanu (2010a, 2010b). Essa corrente dominante, com origem no interacionismo psico-social, tem ainda influenciado o desenvolvimento teórico de outros conceitos em psicologia, sociologia, e, na sequência, nas ciências sociais e humanas, e na gestão. Essa supremacia no que concerne a criatividade, tem conduzido os autores a olvidar o papel do indivíduo no processo e no resultado criativos, chegando a retirar-lhe a responsabilidade e o protagonismo pela geração e produção de ideias. Desse modo, no presente texto, recuperam-se os argumentos em favor da centralidade da pessoa na criatividade, defendendo-se que esta tem uma existência isolada de influências externas, e que, como tal, devem relembrar-se as bases individuais da criatividade.

The paper describes the relationship between creativity and mood disorders. After outlining the main directions of research in this field, the nature of the ascertained correlation between creativity and mood disorders is analysed from a theoretical perspective. Psychological and biological approaches are taken into account. The first is focused on the significance of periods of mania and their influence on cognitive and motivational processes; the second is focused on genetic aspects. A compromise hypothesis based on both approaches is proposed and discussed, in which creativity and mood disorders, although co-determined by basic genetic factors are not independent and influence each other mutually.The psychology of individual differences places creativity at the crossroads of personality and intelligence (Aguilar-Alonso, 1996;Eysenck, 1995a). Both can be affected by disorders. Therefore, it would seem that deficiencies in the sphere of personality or intellect caused by psychological disorders would inhibit creative activity. An assumption of this kind might potentially be true, under one condition: that creativity is fostered only by those individual traits that are associated with good adaptation. However, in the light of philosophical reflections dating back to antiquity, and empirical studies which have been conducted for at least seventy years (for an example see Eysenck, 1994), this is not the case.In discussions on the relationship between creativity and psychological disorders Plato and Aristotle are often quoted. The first of them (see "Phaedrus", XXII, by Plato, IVth century BC/1993) emphasised the affinity of art and madness, and argued that art -treated as being born from divine madness (mania sui generis) -is superior to all kinds of academism. Plato also stressed the particular proximity of that madness to poetry. The second of them, Aristotle, linked melancholia (which means depression or at least dysthymia in modern psychology terms) with eminence in various domains, not only artistic, but also in philosophy and politics (cf.
