Assessing psychological stress and mental workload within work-based scenarios relies heavily upon qualitative, subjective, self-assessment techniques, many of which were originally intended for identifying specific pathological disorders and have reduced sensitivity when evaluating everyday stressors. Quantitative measures involve monitoring changes in the cardiopulmonary system and stress hormone concentration. Although these (e.g. heart rate and blood pressure) provide a basic, reactive indication of the presence of a psychological stressor, many are subject to influence by other bio-mechanisms, or are unable to provide rapid results due to complex laboratory analysis. This study demonstrates how immune responsiveness, known to be influenced by psychological stress, can be used to assess changes in mental workload. Healthy male and female subjects (aged between 26 and 55 years) provided capillary blood samples before and after completing the same, basic, driver-related tasks followed by a simple manoeuvre in two unfamiliar motor vehicles. Using a chemiluminescent technique termed Leukocyte Coping Capacity (LCC), the ability of leukocytes to produce reactive oxygen species in vitro was assessed. Significant post-stressor changes in leukocyte activity were demonstrated between treatment groups. These findings add weight to the proposition that leukocyte activation is a useful quantitative measure of psychological stress and mental loading in humans. This study demonstrates the diagnostic ability of LCC for use during ergonomic evaluation, however the potential industrial applications for this technique are numerous and diverse. ResumoA família desempenha um papel fundamental na promoção da saúde de seus filhos. Em relação à deficiência auditiva, a interação entre a díade família-criança surda possibilita o adequado desenvolvimento linguístico, social e emocional da criança. Para isso uma boa qualidade de vida da família é essencial. O presente estudo teve como objetivo investigar a percepção da qualidade de vida de familiares que possuem um integrante com deficiência auditiva e relacionar com a comunicação cotidiana. Participaram do estudo 20 familiares de crianças com deficiência auditiva que frequentam um centro de média complexidade de referência no Sistema Único de Saúde-SUS. Foram utilizados na pesquisa o questionário de qualidade de vida (WHOQOL-BREF) e "Aspectos Cotidianos que Interferem na Comunicação entre Familiares e Sujeitos com Deficiência Auditiva", elaborado pelas pesquisadoras. Houve correlação entre qualidade de vida e interferência na comunicação na díade família-criança surda, em todos os domínios do WHOQOL-BREF. Quanto maior a percepção no domínio físico, menores as dificuldades comunicativas na presença de ruído eletroeletrônico. Quanto maior o domínio psicológico, menor a interferência de eletroeletrônicos e de fala competitiva na comunicação. Quanto menor o domínio social, menor a interferência do ruído eletroeletrônico, fala competitiva e ausência de leitura orofacial na comunicação. Por fim, quanto maior o domínio ambiental, menor a interferência do eletroeletrônico na comunicação. Concluiu-se que investigar a qualidade de vida dos familiares pode auxiliar no planejamento e elaboração de estratégias terapêuticas, maximizando o bem-estar do familiar e da criança por meio de intervenções mais contextualizadas a realidade do paciente. The family plays a fundamental role in promoting the health of their children. Regarding hearing impairment, the interaction between deaf family-child dyad enables the appropriate language development, social and emotional of the child. For this a good quality of family life is essential. This study aimed to investigate the perception of quality of life for families who have a member with a hearing impairment and relate with everyday communication. The study included 20 families of hearing impaired children who attend a middle complexity center of reference in the Health-SUS System. Abstract: General psychiatrists need to be aware that patients who are hard of hearing may be even more isolated than deaf people in a signing community. Hard of hearing patients with unsatisfactory hearing aids can be greatly assisted by cochlear implants.
