Mental and Behavioural Responses to Bahá’í Fasting: Looking behind the Scenes of a Religiously Motivated Intermittent Fast Using a Mixed Methods Approach

Abstract: Background/Objective: Historically, fasting has been practiced not only for medical but also for religious reasons. Bahá’ís follow an annual religious intermittent dry fast of 19 days. We inquired into motivation behind and subjective health impacts of Bahá’í fasting. Methods: A convergent parallel mixed methods design was embedded in a clinical single arm observational study. “…Ring's research suggests that Bahá'í fasting appears to enhance participants' mindfulness and well-being, lower stress levels, and reduce fatigue. Some of these effects lasted for more than three months after fasting (Ring et al, 2022). Another pilot study demonstrated that 8 days of modified fasting promoted the quality of sleep and daytime performance in non-obese subjects (Michalsen et al, 2003).…”

“…Additionally, improvements in mood and reduced pain perception have been observed, potentially due to increased brain availability of serotonin, endogenous opioids, and endocannabinoids [21]. Changes to the gut microbiome [22] and behavioral changes regarding dietary habits, self-efficacy, and sense of coherence and freedom [23] are being discussed, but cannot be generalized, as data are still scarce.…”

Moreover, fasting has been reported to support long-term dietary and lifestyle changes by enhancing self-efficacy, opening a window of opportunity for creating new habits [ 10 ] and sensitizing taste, especially to salt and sugar.…”
