Meningococcus serogroup C clonal complex ST-10217 outbreak in Zamfara State, Northern Nigeria

Abstract: After the successful roll out of MenAfriVac, Nigeria has experienced sequential meningitis outbreaks attributed to meningococcus serogroup C (NmC). Zamfara State in North-western Nigeria recently was at the epicentre of the largest NmC outbreak in the 21st Century with 7,140 suspected meningitis cases and 553 deaths reported between December 2016 and May 2017. The overall attack rate was 155 per 100,000 population and children 5–14 years accounted for 47% (3,369/7,140) of suspected cases. The case fatality rat… Show more

“…Although some of this shortfall can be explained by the necessity of dropping the etiological confirmation requirement in our model, it is clear that vaccine scarcity had an impact on decisions about where to carry out reactive vaccination and for which age groups. Although data from Nigeria on laboratory-confirmed cases of meningitis were lacking, one study confirmed our assumption that NmC was the predominant cause of meningitis in Nigeria, with 172 of 173 Nm isolates being from serogroup C [30].…”

“… 5 However, the emergence of serogroup C, W, and X strains with epidemic potential threaten the success of MenAfriVac. 35 38 Using the TAC assay, we confirmed one serogroup W and three serogroup C meningitis cases. A meningococcal serogroup A meningitis case was also detected and warrants further investigation.…”

“…Our CSF culture results as confirmed by mRT-PCR showed 6.7% recovery rate. Previous reports from Nigeria using culture of CSF samples had shown bacterial isolation rates ranging from 1.7% to 16.7% (15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20). Results from culture with latex agglutination had rate of 2.9-15.3% (21,22) while results from latex agglutination only was between 9.1-20.4% (23).…”
