Menhaden body lipids: Details of fatty acids in lipids from an untapped food resource

Abstract: Menhaden are utilised almost exclusively for fish meal production. The depot fat is concentrated in the bodies. In anticipation of developments in deboned or minced fishery products menhaden body lipids have been recovered and separated into polar and triglyceride fractions for detailed fatty acid study. The original lipid contains about 30 % long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids and could be nutritionally beneficial if protected from autoxidation. A simple petroleum ether extraction removes essentially the s… Show more

“…Additional papers compare the fatty acid composition of red and white muscle tissue in mackerel (Ackman and Eaton 1971) and white sucker (Mai and Kinsella 1979). A comparison of phospholipids and triglycerides has been made in cod (Addison et al 1968), mackerel (Ackman andEaton 1971: Hardy andKeay 1972), menhaden (Ackman et al 1976), sardine (Hayashi and Takagi 1977 a, b) and white sucker (Mai and Kinsella 1979). Listings of the fatty acid composition of phospholipids in tuna white muscle (Shuster et al 1964), trout (Gray and Mac-Farlane 1961) and hake (deKoning 1966) are available as are fatty acid compositions of black cod triglycerides (Wada et al 1979) and whitefish flesh lipids (Kaitranta and Linko 1979).…”

“…According to Kabata (1,969), T. alcicornis was described from the Atlantic spiny lumpsucker, Eumicroftemus spinosus, taken off Greenland. Fortyeight specimens of the latter fish from the Grand Banks that we examined during 7972-:73 did not harbor any parasitic copepods.…”
