Men and COVID-19: Adding a gender lens

Abstract: In this commentary, the authors point out that there are important gender determinants to both men's and women's vulnerabilities to COVID-19, and call on the global health community to unpack and address these early in the COVID-19 pandemic response. They point to best practices and tools from two decades of engaging men in research and programming in the sexual and reproductive health field.

“…23 It limits the potential for adopting gender-sensitive and gender-transformative public health responses that are frequently advocated in academic scholarship. 23,[31][32][33][34][35] It also clouds the ability to take a deeper dive into understanding why some, but not necessarily all, gender inequalities are unfair and unjust (i.e. considered to be inequities).…”

“…In addition to the importance of taking early restrictive measures to diminish the transmission, the latest clinical evidence indicates that there are gender and age-related differences in the severity of symptoms and mortality rates of COVID-19 cases . The elderly, particularly older men, appear to be more vulnerable to the disease and suffer from a higher risk of mortality globally (Betron et al, 2020;Wenham et al, 2020). People with underlying health conditions have been linked to an increased risk of severity and fatality, especially for those with tuberculosis and high blood sugar levels (diabetes) (Bornstein et al, 2020;Guan et al, 2020;Wingfield et al, 2020).…”

“…Mujeres que ejercen el cuidado, la vigilancia y que laboran en el sistema de salud están expuestas a una violencia grave frente a la cual las medidas existentes son aún más limitadas. Abandonar el enfoque familista se convierte en una oportunidad para implementar medidas que protejan a todas las mujeres frente a la violencia y que involucren a los hombres en la solución del problema (23,24).…”
