“…It should be noted, however, that in a study comparing Japanese and Finnish adolescents, a cross-cultural difference in body dissatisfaction was found only for girls (Maezono et al, 2019), suggesting that culture-by-gender interactive effects on body dissatisfaction in adolescence are not straightforward. The results for gender differences in body image were consistent with previous findings (Grogan, 1999;Koskelainen et al, 2001;Maezono et al, 2019;Olweus, 1994), in which girls scored much higher on body dissatisfaction than boys. Showing that the effect of gender on self-reported mental health problems and body dissatisfaction or eating distress was conditioned by culture is important.…”

“…Body dissatisfaction, bullying victimisation and school safety all made independent contributions to total difficulties and, therefore, are relevant targets for interventions that seek to improve adolescent mental health. Body dissatisfaction emerged as the strongest correlate of total difficulties in the multivariate model, indicating the need for further research on the underlying processes (Duarte et al, 2014;Grogan, 1999). The results also indicate that gender and culture may qualify as effects of bullying victimisation and school safety on adolescent mental health problems.…”

“…Beliefs Related to Gender Identity. Appearance-related norms depend heavily on traditional masculinity ideologycultural expectations of what boys and men should be and look like (Grogan, 2008). Cultural appearance ideals for boys and men are typified by lean, muscular bodies (for a review, see Murnen & Karazsia, 2017).…”

“…Body image primarily refers to subjective attitudes and perceptions of an individual's body shape, weight, and appearance (Cash & Pruzinsky, 2002;Grogan, 2008). It includes two main dimensions, that is, attitudes and self-perceptions related to one's physical appearance (Cash & Pruzinsky, 2002;Grogan, 2006Grogan, , 2008.…”
