Membranes and fivebranes with lower supersymmetry and their AdS supergravity duals

Abstract: We consider superconformal field theories in three and six dimensions with eight supercharges which can be realized on the world-volume of M-theory branes sitting at orbifold singularities. We find that they should admit a N = 4 and N = 2 supergravity dual in AdS 4 and AdS 7 , respectively. We discuss the characteristics of the corresponding gauged supergravities. †

“…The correspondence between the Green's function in M theory and the correlation function of the field theory has been studied in [4,5,6,7]. Maldacena's conjectures have been generalized to theories with less supersymmetries by orbifolding [8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16] and to F theory [18,19,20].…”

“…Since in that case, L S would be SUSY-invariant, the SUSY variation of L S for arbitrary S 4 is a term proportional to ∂ [M S N P QR] arising from the variations of the fermion kinetic terms. Writing this term as 25) and taking B 2 to transform according to 26) we see that the "intermediate" Lagrangian,…”

“…The supersymmetric vacuum has a negative cosmological constant implying that the vacuum in the gauged theory is not Minkowski spacetime but rather anti-de Sitter, AdS 7 . The AdS 7 vacuum with N = 2 supersymmetry has been considered in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence [25], and was shown to be the supergravity dual of the 6D N = (1, 0) SCFT [26], [27].…”

“…The massless vector at k = 1 in (2) corresponds to R symmetry current of dimension 2. N = 4 supersymmetric case: In [16,15] supergravity duals of 3 dimensional N = 4 theories with ADE global symmetries were analyzed. They can be realized as worldvolume theories of brane configurations in spacetime.…”

“…The maximally supersymmetric theories in 3 and 6 dimensions have been studied recently [6,12,13,14,15]. The lower supersymmetric case is realized on the worldvolume of M theory at orbifold singularities [16] (See also [17]). Very recently, along the line of [11], the Kaluza-Klein states of supergravity theory on the orbifolds of AdS 4 × S 7 were studied and compared with the chiral primary operators of the SCFT on the boundary [18].…”
