“…Perhaps a better assessment of parent-child responsiveness would be observation of parents and children over a longer period (Kochanska & Aksan, 2004) or without being prompted to engage in specific activities. As prior research suggests many children are given media in response to problematic emotions (Coyne et al, 2021(Coyne et al, , 2022 the mediating factor between attachment and PMU may be the frequency of media emotion regulation versus parental emotion regulation. As children may become more dependent on media to regulate their emotions.…”

“…Problematic media use is typically defined as a pattern of media use which is excessive, or maladaptive, and interferes with children's overall functioning (Domoff et al, 2020). The Interactional Theory of Childhood Problematic Media Use (IT-CPU) posits that PMU may begin to develop in infancy and is influenced by three factors: distal factors (environment or context such as parent's problematic media use and screentime; Lauricella et al, 2015), proximal factors (antecedents such as parents beliefs about media; Funk et al, 2009), and maintaining factors (reinforcement of media processes such as media emotion regulation; Coyne et al, 2021Coyne et al, , 2022Domoff et al, 2020). These three types of factors work together to shape the trajectory of problematic media use by influencing the processes driving development (Bronfenbrenner & Morris, 2006).…”

“…According to the interactional theory of childhood problematic media use [17], along with distal factors such as parent-child demographics, child screen use is influenced by an interaction of proximal processes such as child temperament [19,20] and interactional family dynamics [21]. Zhao and associates [22] identified parent-child interaction as the most significant mediator between problematic screen use and poor psychosocial child outcomes.…”

“…This parenting method is defined as media emotion regulation in the literature, but for clarity in the Turkish text, it will be referred to as emotion regulation through media (medya aracılığıyla duygu düzenleme). Media emotion regulation has gained attention in recent academic studies regarding early childhood (Coyne et al 2021(Coyne et al , 2022(Coyne et al , 2023. These studies have explored various predictors of media emotion regulation and the relationship between media emotion regulation and children's socioemotional outcomes.…”
