“…In our study, we found that the melatonin receptors MT1 and MT2 in the goat seminiferous tubule were increased during the breeding season, indicating that melatonin during the breeding season increased and influenced the process of spermatogenesis. Meanwhile, many studies have shown that melatonin receptors are expressed in spermatozoa and spermatocytes [3537]. However, we found that melatonin receptors are expressed in almost every subtype of spermatogenesis cells in dairy goats.…”

“…Sertoli cells can secrete several factors, such as GDNF, fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF2), bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) and so on, all of which are related to spermatogenesis [36]. Recent reports have shown that exogenous melatonin acts via its receptors and appears to play regulatory roles in the development and function of bovine Sertoli cells [37]. In our study, ELISA showed that the GDNF concentration was increased in the melatonin added group, indicating that melatonin can promote Sertoli cell produced GDNF.…”

“…This result differs from those found in other species. The melatonin receptor MT 1 has been previously detected in isolated Leydig cells from Syrian hamster testes [17], whereas both MT 1 and MT 2 receptors have been evidenced in isolated bovine Sertoli cells [52]. However, these differences could be due to the dissimilar identification methods for melatonin receptors.…”

“…Melatonin action must be mediated by specific melatonin receptors; therefore, mutations in the MTNR1A gene could affect BMTs and MQTs. The polymorphism of MTNR1A gene had been extensive studies in Sarda goat, Rasa Aragonesa sheep, pig, Sika deer and Mediterranean Italian buffaloes, and association studies revealed a significant relationship with reproductive activities (Chu et al, 2007;Martínez-Royo et al, 2012;Yang et al, 2014aYang et al, , 2014b. However, studies of MTNR1A with BMTs and MQTs are relatively rare.…”

“…In mammals, MTNR1A and MTNR1B have been cloned in many species and it has been found that MTNR1A has a unique capacity for high-affinity binding to melatonin and that it mediates numerous physiological functions (Reppert et al, 1996;Lai et al, 2013;Yang et al, 2014aYang et al, , 2014b. Based on this background, it is rational to hypothesize that the MTNR1A gene may be correlated with body measurement traits (BMTs) and meat quality traits (MQTs).…”
