Melanoma in the Italian Population and Regional Environmental Influences: A National Retrospective Survey on 2001–2008 Hospitalization Records

Abstract: Objective: To assess the burden of regional environmental factors influencing the incidence of Melanoma in the Italian population and overcome the problem of partial population coverage by local cancer registries and thematic archives. Methods: We analyzed the Italian national hospitalization records from 2001 to 2008 provided by the Ministry of Health, excluding hospital re-admissions of the same patients, in order to assess the occurrence of Melanoma over a 8-year period. “…Due to the low incidence of melanoma in Italy (13.5 cases/year over 100,000 inhabitants) [ 32 ], for a general population screening to be cost-effective, the following requirements should be fulfilled: a good uptake rate, a practical and accurate method for identifying the target population, and a selection of a target population that ensures a high yield of melanoma diagnosis [ 25 , 33 ]. Thus far, no unique scoring system has been developed to discriminate high-risk vs. low-risk individuals with respect to melanoma development.…”

“…Melanoma has a rate of 22.0 in males and 18.3 in females per 100,000/year (standardized for European population) in Italy (15), and higher incidence rates (32.5/100,000/year in males; 23.7/100,000/year in females) have been recorded in Friuli Venezia Giulia (FVG) (15), a Region located in Northeast Italy at the border with Austria and Slovenia. The incidence of melanoma in Italy shows an increasing trend (15), Northeast Italy has the highest prevalence of melanoma (16), and the FVG Region has the highest rate of hospitalization for melanoma in Italy (17).…”

“…O predomínio do MC quanto ao sexo não é concorde na literatura. Maior prevalência do MC em pacientes do sexo feminino ocorre em países como a Alemanha e Itália 8,21,22 , mas difere dos Estados Unidos 10 e países da Oceania 5,6 onde há o predomínio em pacientes do sexo masculino. Esses, por sua vez, seguem o mesmo padrão da Inglaterra 23 , país que originalmente contribuiu com a imigração dessas localidades.…”
