“…One of the most important aspect of the experience of the relatives of critically ill patients is attempting to retain contact by visiting and seeing them. This is reflected in much international research, both quantitative and qualitative, identifying proximity to the patient to be a major concern for relatives of critically ill patients (Coulter, 1989;Wilkinson, 1995;Quinn et al, 1996;Zazpe et al, 1997;Burr, 1998;Mendoca and Warren, 1998;Bijttebier et al, 2001;Lee and Lau, 2003;Al-Hassan and Hweidi, 2004;Engstrom and Soderberg, 2004;Hughes et al, 2005;Moggia et al, 2005;Agard and Harder, 2007;Eggenberger and Nelms, 2007;Kutash and Northrop, 2007;Plakas et al, 2009;McKiernan and McCarthy, 2010;Hoghaug et al, 2012;Obringer et al, 2012). Bournes and Mitchell (2002) were the first to conceptualize 'vigilant attentiveness' as a continuous awareness and dedication of relatives to know what is going on and be with their loved one in the ICU as much as possible.…”

“…In the postoperative phase, the assessment of family situation, central to the coping after surgery, was achieved only for some patients. However, earlier research shows that individuality of patients and their families is of central importance in perioperative care; families have needs for support and information while one of their members is in hospital (Leino‐Kilpi, 1992; Åstedt‐Kurki, 1992; Tarkka, 1996; Paavilainen & Åstedt‐Kurki, 1997; Zazpe et al ., 1997).…”
