Medical Management of Uterine Fibroids

Abstract: Uterine leiomyomas are the most common benign tumors of the uterus. Though benign, they can affect the quality of life for many women. Compared with the standard surgical treatments, medical therapy is attractive and avoids possible surgery-related complications. No medical therapy currently exists that can induce rapid regression of the myoma and symptoms with minimal side effects without affecting fertility. This review evaluates medical treatments that are currently available for the treatment of uterine fi… Show more

“…This finding may be in accordance with that of previous studies which pointed out that high E2 could impair embryonic cleavage (24). The morphology and cleaving status are used to evaluate embryo developmental potential before uterine transfer (10). Embryos were graded into three grades depending on morphological criteria (blastomeres number, blastomeres regularity and fragmentation rate).…”

“…The introduced GnRH antagonist, Cetrorelix, has been shown to be efficient in preventing the LH rise during stimulation in IVF protocols (8) A successful in vitro fertilization (IVF) program can be achieved through an accurate embryo quality evaluation (9). In most IVF clinics around the world, this quality assessment depends mainly on the morphologi-cal evaluation of cleavage stage embryos before embryo transfer which is correlated to implantation potential of each particular embryo and pregnancy rate after IVF (10). For this purpose many classification systems developed (11).…”

“…Gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues (GnRHa) comprise some of the chemotherapeutic drugs currently used in fibroid treatment. However, the short half-life of these drugs is a major limitation to treatment and prolonged usage can also lead to adverse effects, such as depression, reduced breast size, and vaginal dryness 16,17 . Anastrozole and Letrozole are also used in the treatment of uterine fibroids.…”

“…Prace dotyczące dystrybucji receptorów steroidowych w macicy wykazały większą koncentrację receptorów dla estrogenów i progesteronu w tkance mięśnia-ków niż w otaczającym endometrium [6][7][8]. Uważa się, że progesteron może mieć dwojaki wpływ na mięśniaki za pośrednictwem lokalnych czynników wzrostu.…”
