Medical examination for asbestos-related disease

Abstract: There are millions of workers whose exposure to asbestos dust prior to the implementation of asbestos regulation and improved control measures places them at risk of asbestos‐related disease today. In addition, workers are still being exposed to significant amounts of asbestos, when asbestos materials in place are disturbed during renovation, repair, or demolition. Given the continued presence of asbestos‐containing materials in industrial, commercial, and residential settings throughout the U.S., a sizeable p… Show more

“…HRCT should be decisive in cases where the chest radiograph is ambiguous (Hering et al 2004). Ideally, whilst using HRCT, lung regions and the pleura can be easily evaluated whilst in radiographs, due to overshadowing, they can only be assessed with difficulties (Levin et al 2000). Furthermore, HRCT scans allow for small differences in tissue density to be detected and quantified.…”

“…However, in some cases, asbestosis cannot be detected by chest radiography, and high-resonance computerized tomography (HRCT) is helpful for diagnosis in such cases. So, HRCT is recommended for diagnosing asbestosis (11). …”

“…They suggest that uncertainty exists because of the relationship between the exposure and the outcome. Berry (1999) and Levin et al (2000) conducted research in humans that indicates chrysotile asbestos fibers, which clear the respiratory tract in months, have less effect than amphibolic asbestos, which clears in years.…”
