Medical Chemists and the Origins of Clinical Chemistry in Britain (circa 1750–1850)

Abstract: In this history, I review developments leading toward the establishment of clinical chemistry in Britain. Chemical research by certain physicians occurred in the context of medical traditions founded on vitalism, distillation analysis, and limited chemical knowledge. Urine chemistry figured prominently in this period together with the analysis of kidney and bladder stones. Bright's team studying albuminuria was the first clinical research school in Britain, whereas Prout's survey of physiological chemistry, ba… Show more

“…Uric acid (2,6,8-trioxypurine) was first isolated from bladder stones in 1776 by the Swedish pharmacist Scheele (1742–1786) who also coined the name “lithic acid” to refer to the acidic substance in these calculi [10, 11]. Around the same time, Wollaston (1766–1828) made the seminal identification of cystine stones (named after their bladder locale) [12, 13], which inspired Pearson (1751–1828) [14] to analyze a large number of stones and found Scheele’s lithic acid in all of them.…”
