Mediation analysis of the relationship between environmental concern and intention to adopt green concepts

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to extend the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) by incorporating environmental concern (EC) and its dimensions to explain developer’s intention to adopt green concepts in their future housing projects. The objectives were to investigate the relationship among the proposed constructs as well as to examine the mediating role of attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control (PBC) on the relationship between EC and its dimensions and intention to adopt green conce… Show more

“…TPB has always maintained a possibility of being integrated with other theories, mainly when the inclusion of other variables can be depicted to advance the model's predictive utility (Ajzen, 1991(Ajzen, , 2011. Extant research has opined that employees with concern for their environment tend to be more receptive towards obtaining environmental knowledge (Okumus et al, 2019), build self-confidence, and have a positive attitude to engage in environmental conservation behaviour that would help reduce environmental degradation (Lau & Hashim, 2020). Further, environmental concern is a form of belief about what is currently happening in the environment.…”

“…When employees are disturbed about the environment due to the evidence of ecological degradation being experienced, their attitudinal disposition would be inclined towards environmental conservation (de Groot & Steg, 2007). Such attitudinal disposition stems from a sense of responsibility and a desire to save the environment (Lau & Hashim, 2020). Environmental concern can impact behavioural belief that the environment is in danger and there is a need to start carrying out actions to preserve the environment (Ajzen, 2015).…”

“…Joshi et al (2019) reported a significant mediation effect of attitude on the relationship between perceived knowledge and consumption intention. Lau and Hashim (2020) observed that PBC mediated the effect of environmental concern on green intention. Mindfulness operates as a distal factor with regard to pro-environmental behavior (Hunecke and Richter, 2019) and having been conceptualized as a trait, is likely to impact intention through these factors.…”

“…A green building would optimize the consumption of electricity, water, wastage and the demand for sustainable building material during the building process. Green buildings can minimize the consumption of non-renewable resources (CURC, 2008;Vyas and Jha, 2016;Jha, 2017, Lau andHashim, 2019;Dell'Anna et al, 2020). They also maximize the efficiency of the whole building process by increased recycling and by using more resources that are renewable.…”
