Mediastinal Paraganglioma

Abstract: Paragangliomas of the mediastinum are rare, with only approximately 150 cases reported in the literature. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice; however, these tumors often lie near critical vascular structures. Here we present the case of a patient with a mediastinal paraganglioma discovered during a diagnostic procedure.

“…Therefore, complete surgical resection is considered the treatment of choice in functional and non-functional endothoracic paragangliomas (1,(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)14,(16)(17)(18)(19)22,32,33); in fact, these tumors are relatively resistant to chemotherapy and radiotherapy (1,11,19,32).…”

“…Mediastinal paragangliomas are very uncommon. Most published literature about this tumor is in the form of single case reports 3‐6,8‐10 or case series of fewer than 15 cases each accumulated over a very long period of time at tertiary academic centers 11,12 . Brown et al 11 from Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, provided an excellent review of this topic.…”
