Median Rhomboid Glossitis: A Clinical and Microbiological Study

Abstract: Objectives:The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between median rhomboid glossitis (MRG) and Candida and bacteria species, prevalence and possible association with age, gender, smoking, denture wearing, and diabetes mellitus. Methods:Tongue examinations were performed on 4244 consecutive patients. Of all the examined patients, 30 diagnosed with MRG were selected as the study group and another 30 patients were selected as the control group, and these 2 groups were compared in terms of age… Show more

“…Analyzing the possible variables associated with colonization rate (42.3%) by yeasts found in patients with CKD undergoing HT, our results are in accordance with other groups of volunteers previously studied such as smokers , patients with DM , and dental prostheses users . Also in agreement with Yazdani et al.…”

“…Candida infection promotes different clinical manifestations on the tongue surface, both acute and chronic. Among them, chronic erythematous candidiasis determines an atrophic lesion defined as median rhomboid glossitis [5, 70], while an acute erythematous candidiasis can promote an a specific AG [79]. …”

“…Candida infections, in particular the development of a median rhomboid glossitis, are strongly associated with diabetes mellitus, with an incidence up to 30% of patients [3, 70, 79]. …”

“…The diagnosis usually is evident from the clinical appearance of the lesion. Goregen et al ( 2011 ) observed that although there was a signifi cant association between MRG and Candida and diabetes mellitus, possible risk factors for oral candidosis such as smoking and denture wearing were invalid for MRG. Despite the relative frequency of MRG, little is known about its etiology.…”

“…Most of these lesions are asymptomatic, although some patients may complain of persistent pain, irritation, or pruritus (McNally and Langlais 1996 ). This fi nding may suggest that these lesions occur as a result of prolonged contact between the Candida-infected midline dorsum of the tongue and the hard palate (Goregen et al, 2011 ). MRG may be accompanied by a concomitant contact lesion on the palate (usually the hard palate) (Fig.…”
