Media system dependency and change in risk perception during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract: On February 27, 2020 the first case of COVID-19 contagion was detected in Mexico, and by the end of March phase 2 of the epidemic had been declared in the country when local transmission was detected. In a context of crisis and uncertainty like the one described, a risk perception tends to arise among the population that fears to be affected personally, to a large extent due to the influence exerted by the media by information they provide about the contingency, which derived from the media system dependency t… Show more

“…When faced with the risk of a life-threatening disease, the public relies on the media to obtain accurate and up-to-date risk information in order to make informed decisions about health-protective behaviors. The “Media-System Dependency Theory” ( Ball-Rokeach and DeFleur, 1976 ) suggests that, in times of risk crisis with high uncertainty, the public increases its reliance on the media ( Casero-Ripollés, 2020 ; Huynh, 2020 ; Muñiz, 2020 ) and tends to obtain risk assessment and risk response advice from the media they perceive as trusted ( Lachlan et al, 2016 ).…”

“…Our review of literature reveals several studies dealing with media consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic. Muñiz (2020) conducted an online survey among Facebook users in Mexico to determine the level of media system dependency held by the Mexican citizens at the beginning of the crisis. Their findings revealed a moderate dependency together with a moderate risk perception among the population.…”

“…However, participants who were feeling lonely were more inclined to use social media to cope with lacking social contact. Both Muñiz's (2020) and Cauberghe et al (2021) studies were conducted in one country only and did not examine channel preferences during the pandemic as related to specific media dependency goals cross-culturally. Therefore, we pose the research question:…”

“…During social isolation, people have monitored the media more frequently . Both traditional and social media had become important tools to access information (Muñiz, 2020). During a health crisis, the need to get precise and recent information to make decisions on protecting health is one of the reasons that increase the use of media (Garfin, Silver & Holman, 2020).…”
