Media Portrayal of the Nursing Homes Sector: A Longitudinal Analysis of 51U.S. Newspapers

Abstract: Overall, findings reveal changes in how newspapers framed NH coverage, not only with respect to tone but also with respect to what dimensions of this complex issue have been emphasized during the time period analyzed. Variation in media coverage may contribute to differences in government and public views toward the NH sector across regions and over time.

“…It extends prior work by Miller et al (2012Miller et al ( , 2013 that analyzed the content of NH coverage of 1,704 articles published in four newspapers-The New York Times, The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, and The Los Angeles Times, during that period. It also extends previous descriptive work using the 16,280 articles database (Miller et al, 2017) through use of multinomial logistic regression techniques to examine the relationship between tone-positive, negative, mixed, and neutral-and other coverage attributes-prominence, themes, central actor, and issue jurisdiction, controlling for region and year, all else being equal.…”

“…The larger sample improved external validity due to the inclusion of newspapers from nearly every state. The present study also builds on prior research using the 16,280 article dataset (Miller et al, 2017). It is the largest NH media study to examine the correlates of tone while controlling for other article characteristics.…”

“…Content analysis was the best method for this study since news articles were the desired sampling unit from which to gather data. As seen in multiple studies, (Feltham-King, & Macleod, 2016;Patterson, Hilton, & Weishaar, 2016;Chandelier, et al, 2018;Miller, Livingstone, & Ronneberg, 2017) content analysis is an effective method when collecting data from newspaper articles. There is a disadvantage, namely unreported information in articles, however, steps have been taken to minimize this disadvantage, consequently, missing data was considered when running the statistical analysis.…”

“…Higher education is also poised to combat ageist beliefs that permeate society. Age stereotypes have become more negative over time with far-reaching consequences from the immediate effects of age discrimination to the subsequent impact on older adults' well-being and longevity (Levy, 2017). A variety of factors have been implicated in contemporary ageism including intergenerational tensions from competition over resources in aging societies that foster reciprocal threat and ageism (North & Fiske, 2012).…”
