Media Ecosystems: A Novel Approach for Content-Awareness in Future Networks

Abstract: This chapter proposes a novel concept towards the deployment of a networked 'Media Ecosystem'. The proposed solution is based on a flexible cooperation between providers, operators, and end-users, finally enabling every user first to access the offered multimedia services in various contexts, and second to share and deliver his own audiovisual content dynamically, seamlessly, and transparently to other users. Towards this goal, the proposed concept provides content-awareness to the network environment, network… Show more

“…In parallel, evolutionary approaches that will help us move toward the FI such as CAN are being proposed 4 and are being developed within the Alicante (Media Ecosystem Deployment Through Ubiquitous Content-Aware Network Environments) Project (http://ictalicante.eu). The goal of this work is to enable efficient routing and forwarding of content based on given content and context characteristics and also to enable content adaptation.…”

“…Monitoring information is used locally and aggregated at the CAN level to manage the network behavior and establish long-term adaptation policies. 4 One important aspect is the appropriate media encoding configuration. The Alicante Project is working on encoding guidelines for SVC that facilitate distributed adaptation.…”

“…The SP will only offer high-level services, and content providers (CPs) will provide the content. The HomeBox is a residential gateway placed at the end users' premises, used by the SP for content and service publishing and distribution, and by end users to connect to CANs and consume services [2].…”
