Multimedia document authoring is a multifaceted activity, and authoring tools tend to concentrate on a restricted set of the activities involved in the creation of a multimedia artifact. In particular, a distinction may be drawn between the design and the implementation of a multimedia artifact.This paper presents a comparison of three different authoring paradigms, based on the common case study of a simple interactive animation. We present details of its implementation using the three different authoring tools, MCF, Fran and SMIL 2.0, and we discuss the conclusions that may be drawn from our comparison of the three approaches.

Activation and deactivation of media items plays a fundamental role in the playing of multimedia and time-based hypermedia presentations. Activation and deactivation information thus has to be captured in an underlying document format. In this paper we show that a number of aspects of activation and deactivation information can be captured using both link structures and events in time-based hypermedia. In particular, we discuss how deactivation and activation can be specified, how the activations and deactivations can be initiated and potential (synchronization) relationships between the elements involved. We first introduce the notions of time-based scheduling and event-based scheduling and then present a short summary of linking. We discuss the similarities between event-based scheduling and linking. We describe a number of aspects of activation and deactivation that can be specified within a document. We then discuss how activation and deactivation information can be recorded in link structures and events.

Declarative definition of multimedia presentation such as provided by SMIL standard can be considered as the most significant advance in the multimedia integration domain. However, the requirements of a model that could express richer scenarios for presentations are always a challenge. The work presented here proposes an extended model based on the concept of structured media and sub-elements that allows a finer granularity and a more semantic specification of significant events and locations inside media fragments. The new media fragments can be composed in multimedia scenarios through the specification of temporal, spatial and spatio-temporal relations. Moreover, we propose an abstract animation model that can be combined with the intra-media temporal structuration to specify animation effects in a flexible, not redundant and easy to maintain way. The underlying model is the Madeus model that is a flexible model based on the structural, interval, region and relative constraints. This paper describes the subelement and the abstract animation models and shows how they are implemented in the Madeus multimedia framework. A complete schema of the video authoring tool based on this model is also specified. Thanks to that, the fine-grained authoring of multimedia scenarios with video media can be done in an easy and effective way.
