Mechanistic Insights into a Sustainable Mechanochemical Synthesis of Ettringite

Abstract: Mechanochemistry offers an environmentally benign and facile synthesis method for a variety of cement paste constituents. In addition, these methods can be used to selectively tune the properties of cement components. The mineral ettringite is an important component of cementitious materials and has additional technological potential due to its ion exchange properties. Synthesis of ettringite via mechanochemistry is an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional wet‐chemical synthesis established in i… Show more

“…In 2019, Emmerling and colleagues, including Minas da Piedade, were involved in mechanistic studies of the mechanosynthesis of ettringite [ 97 ]. Ettringite ([Ca 3 Al(OH) 6 ] 2 ·(SO 4 ) 3 ·26H 2 O) is an important mineral present in cement concretes, with technological potential due to its ion exchange ability.…”

“…Mechanochemistry reveals high conversion and short reaction times (94% in 2 h), without CO 2 release or wastewater production nor the need for product separation, contrary to the conventional wet-chemical traditional synthesis. Mechanistic studies were performed based on one-, two-, and three-step synthetic procedures, and the results provided a new understanding of mechanochemical ettringite formation, important for further improvement of synthesis efficiency, envisaging a possible industrial implementation [ 97 ].…”

“…Ettringite (Ca 6 Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 (OH) 12 •26H 2 O) is a common early-age hydrate of ordinary Portland cement, calcium aluminate cement and calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement [11,12]. Ettringite is a key constituent in cement-based construction materials because ettringite is formed in the first few hours of hydration and provides early-age strength to cement mixture [13,14]. The ettringite immediately crystallises into needle-like shapes with a large aspect ratio when water is added to calcium aluminate in the presence of calcium sulfate [11,15].…”
