Mechanisms and individuality in chromium toxicity in humans

Abstract: With regards to health, chromium (Cr) is an ambiguous chemical element. Although it is considered to be an important micronutrient, it also is connected with several pathologies, including carcinogenicity. The mechanism of action of Cr and its compounds in humans is not yet fully understood. Currently, three possible mechanisms have been proposed for carcinogenesis: Cr(VI)‐induced multistage carcinogenesis, genomic instability, and epigenetic modification. Therefore, in addition to the toxicity of this metal a… Show more

“…Pb is toxic for children and adults, causing anemia, hypertension, cognitive deficits, immunodeficiency, infertility, bone and tooth development delays, vitamin D deficiency, and hepatic and renal effects [ 84 , 85 ]. The second element, Cr, although involved in human lipid and protein metabolism (in a form of Cr 3+ ) [ 86 ], is also connected with several pathologies, including carcinogenic (in a form of Cr 6+ ) [ 87 , 88 ]. Thus, finding these elements in propolis at excessive levels indicates that bee products must be tested before being released for consumption or medical use.…”

“…DNA damage, genomic instability, and ROS generation are accepted as mechanisms of Cr toxicity and carcinogenicity. Both Cr (VI) and Cr (III) are capable of producing ROS (Pavesi and Moreira, 2020). Cr carcinogenicity is followed by DNA damage as disruption of transcription regulation.…”

“…The more tissues retain chromium, the higher tendency for chromium-induced oxidative stress to occur, altering various metabolic pathways in the process of inducing tox-icity (22,37,41,42). The ameliorative role of ANLA in reducing tissue retention might be due to its ability to chelate Cr (VI) ion truncating Cr (VI) reduction pathways (43). This may prevent the generation of other Cr ion intermediates implicated in inducing oxidative stress and toxicity (44)(45)(46).…”
