Multielemental Analysis of Bee Pollen, Propolis, and Royal Jelly Collected in West-Central Poland

Abstract: Beehive products possess nutritional value and health-promoting properties and are recommended as so-called “superfoods”. However, because of their natural origin, they may contain relevant elemental contaminants. Therefore, to assess the quality of bee products, we examined concentrations of a broad range of 24 selected elements in propolis, bee pollen, and royal jelly. The quantitative analyses were performed with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma optical em… Show more

“…This study used the ED-XRF technology to analyze the most abundant and essential minerals (K, P, Ca, Zn, Mn, Fe, Cu, and S) in bee pollen, vital for human health and well-being. Recently, our group has published a paper describing the use of ICP-MS and ICP-OES to analyze a large group of bee pollen samples, including propolis, bee pollen, and royal jelly [ 13 ]. However, compared with the ICP methods, ED-XRF is much faster and does not require a tedious sample preparation.…”

“…Studies reporting elemental analysis of bee pollen are abundant. It is recognized that the content of macroelements (K, P, S, Ca and Mg, followed by Na, Fe, Mn, Al and Zn) as well as microelements and trace elements can vary in bee pollen considerably [42,43]. On the contrary, works describing NHC analysis are scarce.…”
