Mechanism of Water Oxidation by the μ-Oxo Dimer [(bpy)2(H2O)RuIIIORuIII(OH2)(bpy)2]4+

Abstract: The kinetics and mechanism of CeIV oxidation of the water oxidation catalyst [(bpy)2(H2O)RuIIIORuIII(OH2)(bpy)2]4+ (1, RuIIIORuIII) have been investigated by UV−visible measurements with application of global analysis. The reaction proceeds by stepwise oxidation of RuIIIORuIII to RuVORuV with oxidation of RuIVORuIII the slow step. RuVORuV has been identified as an intermediate by the appearance of its ClO4 - salt as a black suspension in concentrated solutions at 5 °C. It is the key intermediate in water oxida… Show more

“…Since that time, 1 has become one of the most studied water oxidation catalysts [53][54][55][56][57]. Even with 25 years of study, the mechanism by which 1 oxidizes water is still under active discussion [58][59][60][61][62].…”

“…Using these one-electron oxidant systems has enabled the identification of every oxidation state of 1 between (III,III) and (V,V) [61]. The (V,V) oxidation state is often proposed to be the final one before oxygen is released [58]. Study of the spectroscopic features of various proposed intermediates of 1 along the catalytic cycle between the (III,III) and (V,V) oxidation states has been used to fit the data to a mechanistic model [61].…”

“…(ii) RC mechanism Meyer's (Gersten et al 1982) (Binstead et al 2000). Although there remains much mechanistic uncertainty over the nature of the discrete mechanism by which the O-O bond formation occurs, the precursor to oxygen formation is two d 3 metal oxos in tetragonal ligand fields disposed in a side-by-side orientation.…”
